Job Description:

The SUNY Reconnect & Adult Learner Advisor at SUNY Maritime College reports to the Director of the Student Engagement and Advising Center (SEA Center) and serves as the College's single designated point of contact for the SUNY Reconnect program, a SUNY System initiative that helps adult learners with some college credit but no credential return to complete a degree. The Advisor manages a caseload of prospective and enrolled Reconnect students and other adult learners, coordinating outreach, admissions, program planning, and credit-for-prior-learning evaluation, and ensuring the College meets SUNY Central's reporting and compliance requirements for the program.

This position also contributes more broadly to advising capacity within the SEA Center, supporting adult learners and current students outside of traditional daytime hours.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the College's single point of contact for prospective and enrolled Reconnect students, liaising with Admissions and the Registrar's Office to ensure award eligibility is identified and integrated into the admissions process consistent with SUNY guidance.
  • Conduct proactive outreach to prospective adult learners, coordinating with the SUNY Recruitment Response Center and NYS Department of Labor Career Center referrals, and supporting recruitment efforts using SUNY's Reconnect campaign kits and campus-specific materials.
  • Develop and maintain program maps for the AAS program so adult learners have a clear, credit-efficient path to completion, including winter/summer term sequencing.
  • In coordination with the College Registrar, identify and process credit for prior learning, including prior military, technical, or maritime industry experience.
  • Hold regular evening/weekend advising hours aligned with adult learners' schedules, and coordinate wraparound supports (tutoring referrals, career advising, non-academic guidance) so students are not routed through multiple offices.
  • Track program participation and outcomes and prepare the reporting SUNY Central requires of participating campuses.
  • Work with the Director of the SEA Center and the Assistant Director of the SEA Center on early alert management and accommodations testing support.
  • Represent the program and department on appropriate committees and at campus recruitment and student-success events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required;
Master's-level education preferred (can be working towards degree).
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in academic advising, admissions, enrollment management, or related student services; experience serving adult or nontraditional learners preferred.
  • Knowledge of degree/program requirements, transfer articulation, and credit-for-prior-learning evaluation processes.
  • General knowledge of individual advising and counseling techniques and the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions and to manage a caseload independently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with prospective and current students, faculty, and campus offices.
  • Willingness and ability to work regular evening and occasional weekend hours to accommodate adult learners' schedules.
  • Proficiency in utilizing computer, student information systems, and word processing software.
