Duties Description Teach trades and skills to residents and/or inmates of institutions/facilities under general supervision. Your duties would include the preparation of lesson plans, course outlines, trade analyses and may include shop layout planning, the establishment of shop safety programs and the maintenance of tools and equipment. You would be expected to manage a classroom environment appropriately. You would be responsible for meeting each learner's individual needs and evaluating their progress as part of your record keeping duties.
You may need to utilize technology as part of your instruction to enhance the educational setting.
Minimum Qualifications for taking the Open Competitive Examination:
- Either
1. four years of appropriate trade experience and a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority; - Or 2. an associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience;
- Or 3. a bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.
- - You may refer to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Teaching Initiatives for a description of experience requirements by specialty title.
- - Candidates for Business and Distributive Education must have a bachelor’s degree and follow the New York State Education Department academic teacher certification guidelines.
- - Candidates for Computer Technology must meet the minimum qualifications under option 2 or 3 for Vocational Instructor 1 or Vocational Instructor 2.
- - Candidates for cosmetology/barbering must show proof of current licensure from the New York State Department of State to practice. A current license must be maintained to continue employment.
- - Language Proficiency: must demonstrate your proficiency in the Spanish language. Proficiency must be at a level that would ensure your ability to perform the duties of the position properly.

1. four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 9 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program.
