Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Tenure-track or Tenure) - Architecture and Urban AI FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York is pleased to announce a faculty search as part of the CUNY Martin S. Spergel Initiative in Computational Science supported by the Simons Foundation. The Spitzer School seeks colleague, preferably mid to senior career who will take a leading role in defining the interdisciplinary Spergel cluster, Urban AI:
Intelligent Systems for Sustainability and Planning in Urban Settings. The field of specialty for this full-time tenured or tenure-track position is artificial intelligence and physical design in the urban built environment, engaging emerging fields such as geospatial AI, cyber-physical systems, robotics, or physical AI. This faculty appointment will commence in Fall 2027 and includes teaching, research, and service responsibilities allied with Spitzer’s undergraduate and graduate programs in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and urban studies along with teaching responsibility in the CUNY Graduate Center.

Through the Martin S. Spergel Initiative in Computational Sciences, the position carries a substantial startup package.

We seek a cutting-edge, imaginative scholar whose research builds new computational methods, tools, and theories for design, who understands AI as a creative force in shaping the built environment, and who grapples with the ethical questions that AI raises. The successful candidate will direct this work toward urgent urban challenges, including sustainability, climate resilience, and social equity. As an intellectual leader of the Urban AI cluster, this person will develop, define, and shape its research and pedagogical agendas, and shape the long‑term vision of the initiative in partnership with colleagues at the Spitzer School, the City College of New York, Queens College, and the CUNY Graduate Center.

Although interdisciplinary collaboration is expected, this position is seated in the architecture department at the Spitzer School. A dedicated teacher is needed who is committed to teaching artificial intelligence and computational methods to design students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The appointee will also contribute to the MS in Computational Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research community at the Spitzer School, one that is supported by City Labs, a consortium made up of the Robotics Laboratory with industrial robots, the Advanced Building Construction Laboratory, focused on decarbonization, and the Living Systems Laboratory. The J. Max Bond Center for Urban Futures offers further expertise in urban data analytics with a focus on community engagement.

The Spitzer School is committed to social and sustainable concerns in design and practice, as well as to providing access to the finest education in the art, history, and technology of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and urban studies to the broadest and most diverse student population. A prospective member of the faculty should be prepared to participate in and contribute to this lively intellectual atmosphere and join the SSA in its commitment in furthering justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the academy and the design professions.

Expect to share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

QUALIFICATIONS For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor:

Preferred Qualifications
  • A PhD in architecture, design computation, planning, or a closely related field and a terminal degree in design (architecture or landscape architecture). Completion of the PhD is required before the start date in late August 2027.

  • A demonstrated research agenda applying artificial intelligence or computational methods to design and the urban built environment.

  • A record of teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in design studios, seminars, and/or lecture courses, including the ability to teach AI and computational methods to design students.

  • A sustained record of research, publication, and external funding sufficient for appointment at the rank of assistant,…
