Job Description:

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Counselor at SUNY Maritime College reports to the Director of EOP, manages a caseload of EOP students, and assists in the admission, transition, and retention of EOP students through counseling and advisement, workshops, classes, referrals, and other forms of interventions. The EOP Counselor has full professional responsibility for assisting students to resolve any problems that affect their ability to be successful in their educational and career pursuits and make appropriate referrals to campus services and other resources.

This position will also support the implementation of programs and services for the annual EOP summer program. Reporting to the Director of the EOP and the Director of the SEA Center.

• Independently provide comprehensive advisement, individually and in groups, which include academic, personal, financial, or career-related counseling to a caseload of current EOP students.
• Perform in-depth analysis of student skills, abilities, previous academic performance and factors contributing to the student's academic progress to assist students in program planning, course advising, major and career exploration.
• Assist students to identify, evaluate, and work through personal, academic, social, financial or other challenges.
• Collaborate with the Director on potential expansion of program in both size and scope.
• Help students select suitable educational or vocational goals.
• Use professional judgment to develop solutions to individual student problems using innovative approaches and advising best practices.
• Create and communicate retention-related information, through sessions, and/or courses, as required.
• Maintain regular contact with students on caseload and monitor each student's academic progress.
• Support LEAD 101 (freshman seminar} each Fall semester.
• In collaboration with the Director/, actively collaborate and participate in the college onboarding 5-week EOP summer program
• In collaboration with the Director, attend EOP Orientation Sessions, EOP student activities, and recruitment
• events.
• Assist with interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating Summer Program instructors, tutors, workshop facilitators, and student assistants, as needed.
• Assist Office of Admissions in the evaluation of EOP applicant's transcripts, test scores, and EOP supplemental forms for academic eligibility, enrollment, and program participation.
• Conduct interviews for admission consideration, as appropriate.
• Represent the program and department in appropriate committees.
• Participate in cam pus wide events and programs, which seek to recruit, retain, or encourage the success of low-income and environmentally disadvantaged students.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Master's-level education in Higher Education, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (can be working towards degree}
• Minimum 1 year of experience in student academic advising.
• Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
• Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
• Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
• Proficiency in utilizing computer and word processing software

• Classification/Salary Range:
  The EOP Counselor is a UUP position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $58,000 - $62,000 annually.
