Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens , LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States;

they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020).

The Community Health and Wellness Department at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York is seeking highly motivated and innovative candidates to fill an adjunct faculty position as an instructor of the Health Studies First Year Seminar (HPF
101).

Primary responsibilities for Adjunct Faculty - teaching the Health Studies First-Year Seminar (HPF
101) for students in the Community Health and Wellness Department, specifically the Health Studies program. The FYS design includes two components: the faculty-led lecture hour and the Studio Hour, facilitated by a Student Success Mentor (SSM). The course will require you to think creatively and flexibly, to utilize your disciplinary expertise, and to expand your teaching practice. It will also present you with an invaluable and exciting opportunity to engage with and support LaGuardia students by:

• Introducing students to the key skills and concepts of the appropriate discipline
• Teaching the habits of mind needed for college success
• Providing advisement support in creating a 60-credit educational plan
• Guiding the development of a core ePortfolio in which students reflect on and chart their academic and professional goals.

Master's degree, and/or active progress toward a Doctorate in Political Science or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution

• Applicants with 3 years or more teaching experience.
• Classroom teaching experience at the college or university level.
• The ability toadapt to a wide variety of learning styles.
• Experience with curriculum development.
• Experience in student mentorship and guidance.
• Ability to collaborate with others for the good of the institution.
• Experience or the ability to teach a diverse student population which includes underrepresented communities. Ideally, some level of scholarly engagement and/or participation in professional development.

$116.44/hour
