The Department of Urban Horticulture and Design at Farmingdale State College invites applications for a full-time (10-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor of Horticulture position. The successful candidate will teach courses within the department's recently revised Bachelor of Science program in Urban Horticulture.

The Urban Horticulture B.S. program prepares students for contemporary careers in sustainable horticulture and urban environmental management through an emphasis on sustainable horticultural practices, native plants, permaculture, urban ecology, sustainable turfgrass management, and small-scale food production.

We seekan individual who is prepared and able to teach both core courses, including introductory horticulture, plant materials, and diseases and pests, as well as specialized elective courses that reflect emerging trends and professional practices. These courses willequip graduates with applied skills for careers in one or more of the following areas: sustainable horticulture, plant health care, urban greening, small-scale food production, and commercial and residential turfgrass management.

All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. Candidates should have a research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty resulting in peer-reviewed publications, which are necessary for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College. We are also interested in candidates with a history of, or interest in, pursuing external funding for their research.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. The service component of the workload includes student advising and participation on committees.

The successful candidate will teach 12 contact hours per semester, including dayand evening classes that may also include online and hybrid formats.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ph.D. in Horticulture or a closely related field (such as plant science,plant biology, agricultural sciences) from a regionally accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered, provided the doctorate is conferred by the time of appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Previous college teaching or post-doc experience in a lab or research setting.
