Macaulay Honors College invites applications for a Distinguished Lecturer of Data and Society with expertise in data analysis, visualization, storytelling, AI and its impact, and issues surrounding data and its civic and social impact. The College’s Data and Society Initiative is designed to equip Macaulay students, especially non-STEM majors, with crucial skills necessary to analyze and make meaning from data in an ethical manner in a time of rapidly evolving technology, empowering them to address complex challenges in the communities they serve.

Macaulay students reflect the rich diversity of our city, state, and country and are poised to become leaders across multiple sectors. The Data and Society Initiative helps cultivate a new generation of changemakers, prepared for AI-infused civic and employment landscapes, who harness data-driven insights to drive meaningful impact.

The Distinguished Lecturer in Data and Society is central to the success of this initiative. Reporting to Macaulay’s Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs an Chief Academic Officer, the successful candidate will lead the College’s data-related curricular and co-curricular learning experiences. This faculty member will teach a foundational course, open to all students regardless of academic background, on data-driven problem solving, AI, and ethical data-science practices.

This Distinguished Lecturer will also be responsible for cultivating related co-curricular engaged-learning components of the initiative, including skill-building intensives, data clinics and case studies with external partners, and an annual datathon. The successful candidate will also develop innovative honors curricula in partnership with current Distinguished Lecturers and Academic Affairs staff to support the development of key data literacy skills across the curriculum, including in the Core Macaulay Honors City seminars.

The Distinguished Lecturer in Data Society will also have the opportunity to teach Core seminar sections at Macaulay Central and partner campuses, as well as lead research opportunities for Honors students.

This position is expected to begin in Fall 2027.

The Distinguished Lecturer will perform the following duties:

• Teach 4-6 courses each academic year, depending upon research, service, and co-curricular learning activities.
• Develop and teach courses for honors students in data literacy, data storytelling, artificial intelligence, data ethics, and social impact.
• Develop co-curricular engaged-learning experiences supporting the Data and Society initiative.
