Position Overview

SUNY Ulster, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Library Services.

Reporting to the Director of Library Services, the Assistant Director assists in the development of a library that provides extensive content resources, up-to-date technology, research assistance and supports college initiatives. The Assistant Director of Library Services provides technical expertise for the library, distance education, open education resources development and other teaching initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise day to day operations within the Library when the Director of Library Services is not present.

In consultation with the Director of Library Services establish policies and procedures for daily operation.

Enforce library policies and procedures.

Work with assigned academic departments on collection development and individual instruction sessions for classes.

Provide support and backup for Institutional Technologist (Distance Learning)

Provide technical support for faculty using open education resource platforms. (e.g.; Lumen, OLI)

Evaluate the potential use of new and emerging services and technologies to enhance the efficiency and quality of library services.

Provide training for the professional and clerical staff. (Library management system, Lib Guides and other library tools)

Review and update procedures and workflows for technical processes.

Explore ways library technology can be employed in campus departments.

Coordinate outreach with area high schools to promote presentations and campus visits to the library.

Assist with hiring decisions, staffing and performance evaluations for the library.

Administer Library Management System including resource sharing (ILL).

Administer virtual chat platforms.

Administer room booking, appointment scheduling and hours platform.

Update library content on social media;
Facebook, Instagram

Update library content in Portal channels, Blackboard, College website.

Develop canned reports in the LMS for library departments.

Work with vendors to troubleshoot access problems and continue to stay current with vendors’ updated technologies and systems.

Act as a liaison to OIT to facilitate implementation of new technology.

Execute EZProxy (authentication software) configuration revisions

Assist Director of Library Services in representing the interests of the Library in the state and regional library community. (SLC: SUNY Library Consortium, Southeast NY Library Resources Council.)

Supervise technical services staff.

Compile usage data, prepare reports regarding electronic resources, and participate in library assessment activities.

Assist students with reference questions

Conduct library instruction in person and online

Develop library content. (Videos, FAQs, discipline specific webpages)

Serve on SUNY committees, task forces, and working groups that address long-term challenges and opportunities for the college as well as shorter-term operational issues for the library.

Serve on College committees.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited program.
At least two years’ professional experience in an academic library setting demonstrating progressive responsibility.
Demonstrated skills in automated systems, online services, effective communication and supervision required.
