Lower School Monitor

The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school with approximately 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of New York City. Our vibrant intellectual community draws students from all over the city; admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement and community.

The Berkeley Carroll School seeks a Monitor for the Lower School. The primary responsibilities include supervising the yard, student lunch, and “early bird”, as well as arrival and dismissal duty. Additionally, monitors staff and faculty child care on Professional Days. Monitors must be comfortable communicating with students in a developmentally appropriate way, collaborating with faculty, and intervening in student interactions to help maintain a safe environment for all.

It is important to note that monitor duties occur largely outdoors all year long; monitors must be prepared to spend the day outdoors in a wide range of weather.

This is a 10-month, on-campus position, beginning as soon as possible. The Lower School Monitor reports to the Dean of Faculty.

Mondays-Fridays, from 7:30 am-3:25 pm, when school is in session

• Support with the arrival and dismissal of students, ensuring a safe and efficient entry and exit from the building each day.
• Support with supervision in the yard, student lunch, and early bird, maintaining a safe and joyful environment.
• Monitor child care for employees on Professional Days
• Communicate proactively and professionally with teachers and other school staff.
• Follow and uphold all School policies and procedures related to student safety, supervision, and appropriate boundaries.
• Monitor students in additional spaces as needed.

• Prior experience working in a school or with Lower School-aged children preferred.
• Ability to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where all students feel valued and respected.
• Calm and professional under pressure, particularly when managing last-minute changes, emergencies, or busy school routines.
• Ability to collaborate effectively and professionally with teachers, families, and support staff.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues.
• Ability to establish appropriate boundaries and uphold School expectations with kindness, fairness, and consistency.
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems calmly and effectively and make thoughtful, appropriate decisions.
• Comfort with and ability to be outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all students.

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The rate for this position is $30/hour. This part-time, in-person, non-exempt position begins as soon as possible.
