Academic Advisor

Position Summary:

Academic advisors guide students in all phases of their academic careers from orientation through graduation. They explore options to broaden and enhance academic horizons and help students to understand and meet the challenges of higher education. The incumbent will work closely with the Dean, Academic Advisement Department, and the Chairs of Academic Departments and Programs in planning, management, and operation of programs and student services.

• Advise students - 1-1, in groups
• Meet with students to review course selection and schedule creation
• Review students' records and perform junior and senior checks; advise on graduation requirements
• Review and approve special requests: outside courses (summer school)-involves reviewing outside syllabi, course descriptions, length of sessions, class auditing, P/N grades, and courses requiring special permission
• Follow up with faculty and students on midterm warnings and "Incomplete" grades
• Consult with faculty to identify recipients of academic awards
• Conduct academic sessions at orientation, organize math placement exams
• Assist department chairs in guiding students in their applications to graduate schools
• Coordinate probation/dismissal process and LOA, Medical letters to students
• Contribute to Orientation/Open House-related tasks
• Serve as key team member for the Yeshiva Success Network (YSN
  - Starfish)
• Academic Enrichment Programs

Plan and manage all activities associated with:

• Peer Tutoring Center
  - Solicit recommendations from the faculty for peer tutors. Coordinate the HR onboarding process, manage the appointment system, and monitor progress, making necessary adjustments
• Frontiers Program
  - Oversee the Dean's Scholars Frontiers Program, which includes the development of the academic schedule of seminars
• Manage academic enrichment programs, in addition to the above, specializing in the humanities and social sciences
• Work with the Career Center on the Majors Fair
  Digital Content Management and Communications - update academic department webpages - incl. advisement (ex., FAQ)

• Master's degree
• Minimum of 5 years' experience preferred

• Detail-oriented, strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to students
• Needs the ability to make sound judgments and good organizational skills
• Fosters, encourages, and facilitates open communication and an atmosphere of open expression and communication
• Gains cooperation by explicitly addressing others' interests and concerns
• Demonstrates personal commitment in actions taken and decisions made
• Continually searches for ways to increase satisfaction of faculty, students, staff and other constituents
• Actions are consistent with University strategic and operational objectives and standards
• Supports fair treatment and equal opportunity for all and enforces that policy within his/her sphere of influence
• Excellent writing skills to help students prepare personal statements for law school
• Advisors work with a great degree of independence but need to coordinate with each other
• The advisors meet on a daily basis with the Associate Dean
• They interface primarily with the Offices of the Registrar, Student Affairs, Admissions, Careers, and Student Finance
• Advisors have little involvement in budgetary matters
