Salary Range: $175.00 To $175.00 Annually

Founded in 1965, Portledge School is an independent, pre-nursery through twelfth-grade preparatory day school set on a pastoral 63-acre campus on Long Island's North Shore, just 50 minutes from NYC. Serving approximately 525 students, Portledge offers a rigorous, student-centered college preparatory program delivered through small class sizes and inquiry-based learning.

Portledge School seeks per diem, daily substitute teachers to provide classroom instruction and supervision when regular teachers are absent. The substitute follows the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher, keeps a safe and orderly learning environment, and ensures that students' learning continues without interruption. Assignments may cover any grade level or subject area and are accepted on a day-to-day basis.

Review and carry out the lesson plans, assignments, and routines left by the classroom teacher, adapting delivery as needed to keep students engaged.

Take accurate attendance for each class period and report absences or tardiness according to established procedures.

Maintain classroom management and a respectful, positive learning environment consistent with the school's code of conduct.

Supervise students at all times, including during transitions, lunch, recess, hallway, bus, or other duties assigned in the absent teacher's schedule.

Follow all emergency procedures, including fire drills, lockdowns, and evacuation plans.

Follow individualized education programs (IEPs), 504 plans, and health or allergy accommodations as directed.

Leave a written summary for the regular teacher describing lessons completed, student behavior, attendance issues, and anything requiring follow-up.

Refer student discipline, health concerns, or safety issues to the appropriate administrator, nurse, or counselor.

Perform other related duties as assigned

BA Degree minimum

Teaching certification preferred

Prior experience working with school-age children in a teaching, tutoring, coaching, or childcare role

Superb written and oral communication as well as organizational and time management skills

Familiarity with classroom technology (interactive boards, Google Classroom, or similar)

Uphold all School policies, including the dress code, and address violations according to applicable School procedure
