Applicants should have

• minimum of three (3) years of satisfactory, full-time experience as an appointed, licensed, tenured teacher and/or staff developer/teacher trainer of early childhood or special education. Five (5) years or more is preferred.
• Applicants must have knowledge and/or certifications in preschool special education and a knowledge of the preschool special education provider community in New York City.

(Preference will be given to the following):

Applicants will be selected based on their knowledge of

• preschool special education evidenced by both education and work experience,
• positive behavior support methods for individual, class and school use and
• laws and regulations for special education in New York State.

Applicants should also have an understanding of

• developmentally appropriate standards-based curriculum and instruction, based on New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core and
• best practices in early childhood education (birth to grade three) and special education curriculum and assessment models.

Applicants should also have the ability to

• communicate effectively in writing and verbally in a timely manner with diverse audiences, including teachers, administrators, colleagues, and supervisors,
• use data to set goals and develop strategies,
• work collaboratively with administration, clinical staff and classroom teachers and
• work with guidance to develop linkages with parents and outside agencies to support student progress and
• plan and deliver professional learning.

The Special Education Preschool Support Specialist will provide support to New York State Education Department (NYSED) approved preschool special classes that serve NYCDOE preschool students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) throughout NYC.

Applicants will be responsible for a variety of duties including, but not limited to,

• conduct site visits to preschool special education programs using the established systems and processes, including, but not limited to, collection and organization of data, timelines and submission of reports,
• participate in the development and implementation of behavior plans and IEPs with the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), staff and parents,
• develop resources and provide on-going training and support to parents, teachers and paraprofessionals as needed,
• support teachers in adapting curriculum and instruction to meet individual needs of students,
• conduct planning meetings with teachers to analyze student work, review information regarding classroom assessments, and plan for instruction within the school program,
• collaborate and work with site and organization administrators,
• coordinate and maintain administrative records and reports as required,
• communicate with programs within established timelines to provide a summary of the site visit, resources and site recommendations and
• perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Preschool Special Education

5 extra days during Winter Recess, Spring Recess or Summer recess as per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement
