Job Description

The Operating Mechanic A is responsible for operating and maintaining steam and electric generation equipment, including boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, and associated systems. The role involves regular rounds to monitor equipment performance and ensure safe and efficient operation. Operators perform routine maintenance tasks, troubleshoot issues, and make necessary adjustments to optimize plant performance. Adhering to safety protocols and regulatory standards while documenting operational data is essential.

• Perform operational functions, including the operation of boilers, turbines, generators, water treatment systems, fuel delivery system, and all auxiliary equipment in a steam generating station.
• Perform mechanical maintenance tasks and considerable manual labor.
• Qualify in various operating posts, including Rover/field operator, Control Room operator, and perform electrical high‑tension switching.
• Troubleshoot equipment in the field that fails to start or stop.

• High School Diploma/GED and relevant maintenance experience with a power plant, Merchant Marine, United States Navy, or related field.
• Knowledge of boiler water chemistry and steam cycles.
• Driver's license required.

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field.

• Respond to system emergencies.
• Perform heavy manual labor, including pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and when entering confined spaces.
• Work in adverse conditions that include noise, confined spaces, and high elevations.
• Work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment.
• Work in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as excessive heat, cold, and noise.
• Work in the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high‑energy systems.
• Wear and use either a full or half‑face respirator (without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal) in accordance with OSHA regulations.
• Stand, walk, climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday.
• Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday.
• Use hand‑eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment.
• Wear necessary PPE, including fire‑retardant clothing and safety harnesses.
• Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays.
• Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375 lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25 lbs of clothing and equipment.

The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment and will be expected to work non‑business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

East River Generating Station, New York, NY.

Minimum: $41.75 per hour;
Maximum: $56.39 per hour.

Full time, rotating shifts.
