The NYC Department of Design and Construction, Division of Public Buildings, Architecture and Engineering Unit seeks a Senior Design Reviewer (Mechanical‑HVAC) experienced in heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing, fire protection and energy conservation.
Reporting to the Director and Deputy Directors, the candidate will develop project scopes; conduct existing conditions surveys and forensic analyses; review design and construction documents prepared by consultants; prepare and review documents and construction administration for in‑house design projects; coordinate design reviews with architectural and engineering staff; and provide technical analysis of project design quality issues. The selected candidate must be thoroughly knowledgeable of design principles, industry best practices, building codes, project delivery methodologies, and the latest technologies and innovations in the field, and must interface with sponsors, consultants, contractors, project managers and other technical staff.
All candidates must be currently authorized to work full‑time in the United States. Candidates are required to present original documents proving citizenship or the legal right to work in the U.S.; DDC does not support or sponsor any visa application or extension.
Educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education‑recognized accredited institution. Credentials from foreign institutions require independent equivalency verification from an approved evaluation service. Minimum Qualifications- Seven years of full‑time experience working in a construction trade or as an inspector of construction, hoists and rigging, plumbing, boilers, or elevators; at least 18 months in a managerial or administrative capacity; or
- At least two years of experience as described above, with at least 18 months in a managerial or administrative capacity, and a license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the education law; or
- Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. All candidates must have at least two years of experience as described above, with at least 18 months in a managerial or administrative capacity. One year of apprenticeship in the construction trades or building inspection counts for one year of experience, up to a maximum of three years. Education toward a degree in architecture, architectural technology, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, or a related field is credited on the basis of 30 credits for one year of experience, up to a maximum of four years.
One year of formal training or education in a field related to the construction trades counts for one year of experience, up to a maximum of two years.
- Ten years of commercial and institutional design/review experience in heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing, fire protection, and energy conservation, and multi‑discipline design and construction‑related issue resolution for projects between 5 and 15 million dollars in construction cost.
- Familiarity with sustainable design concepts, LEED requirements, the current NYC Energy Conservation Code, Mechanical and Building Codes, energy analysis for building code compliance, and renewable energy systems.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, and Excel, with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to resolve multi‑discipline design and construction issues.
