Wind Farm Technician I
Support the overall operations and maintenance of one or more wind farms and all related facilities to ensure safety and maximize availability in accordance with Operations mission. The role involves safe execution of scheduled maintenance, troubleshooting and repair activities, training, and safety exercises, while maintaining accountability of plant tools, equipment, and vehicles and providing technical guidance to the O&M team.
Role Responsibilities- Assure that all operation and maintenance activities are performed safely and consistently with policies and procedures for the wind farm site.
- Assist in conducting acceptance and performance tests on systems and equipment following planned maintenance or outages.
- Perform safety and other wind farm-related tasks when assigned and act as backup to personnel at other RWE sites as needed.
- Assist with turbine maintenance including services, major component work and replacement, and troubleshooting.
- Assist with Balance of Plant procedures, including substation and collection system maintenance.
- Adhere to the company’s values and behaviors.
- Perform other duties assigned by the manager.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required;
Associate’s Degree in Sciences or related field preferred. - Alternative 2‑year or 4‑year college degree in technical science (engineering, physics, power, or related) from an accredited school (excluding correspondence or online).
- License or certification experience that may substitute:
Current Journeyman, Current Master Electrician License, or Wind Tech Certificate. - Unrestricted driver license in good standing.
- Minimum of 6 years of work experience in operations and/or maintenance in power generation, transmission, and/or distribution, with at least 2 years in wind turbine experience.
- Wind turbine experience preferred (Vestas, GE, Acciona, Nordex, SGRE).
- Military experience in a technical field (electrical, electronics, or mechanical).
- Willingness to relocate to within a 1‑hour drive of site.
- Knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of environmental and safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to work within tight deadlines and independently, as well as part of a team.
- Willingness to travel to and from job sites as assigned.
- Intermediate PC/Laptop skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Teams.
- Ability to prepare and present technical presentations with assistance.
- Strong problem‑solving abilities and motivation as a self‑starter.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair electromechanical systems independently.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic circuit drawings.
- Identify energy isolation points and implement LOTO for protection.
- Intermediate understanding of electromechanical relay, hydraulic accumulator, linear transducer, and electrical motor.
- Intermediate knowledge of power electronics, motor drives, and AC/DC converters.
- Familiarity with computer network communication protocols is desired.
- Ability to fill out JHA/LOTO/Tailboard forms without assistance.
- Initiative and ability to make decisions with limited supervision.
- Experience working on wind farm sites, including work in and around energized wind turbine generators and balance of plant equipment (substation, pad‑mount transformers, etc.).
- Work occurs in office, warehouse, turbines, and outdoors.
- Maintain a personal weight limitation of 270 lbs.
- Climb wind towers daily, opening/closing hatch doors and identifying safety hazards.
- Maintain balance in closed, small swaying areas on top of and within wind towers, and walk across small surface areas to access turbine internals.
- Push, pull, and lift tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
The hourly base pay range for this position in New York is $37.60 – $50.88.
