Substation Project Structural Engineer
HDR Engineering is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our nationally ranked Power Delivery team. This role focuses on structural design for high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV, including steel structure and foundation analysis & design.
Responsibilities- Execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes, including detailed design, calculations, and detailing.
- Perform foundation design tasks for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types.
- Prepare and/or review construction and material specifications.
- Assign project tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural team members.
- Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews per HDR Quality Management System.
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Mentor and train EITs and designers.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently across different locations.
- Participate in project reviews as needed and provide some travel.
- Technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and related standards.
- Experience using design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience in high voltage substation projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional engineering license (PE or P.Eng) recognized in the location of the position.
- Prior experience as a structural engineer.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar.
- Experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.
