Overview
The section manager will oversee environmental programs for waste and chemicals, manage staff, and ensure compliance with regulations and company policies while promoting sustainability and safety. The role requires strong experience in waste management (hazardous, non-hazardous, universal, e-waste, and recyclables), chemical management (safety data sheet, petroleum bulk storage, chemical bulk storage, risk management plan, and treatment, storage, and disposal facility), and regulatory agency relations.
Additionally, familiarity with green chemistry is preferred.
- Supervise and direct workforce activities, prioritize daily assignments, and ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective operations.
- Develop and implement EH&S programs, policies, and procedures to protect employees, the public, and the environment.
- Interface with management to identify EH&S needs and integrate considerations into planning and decision-making.
- Manage hazardous waste and PCB compliance programs, including TSDF audits, manifests, permits, and regulatory reporting.
- Serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies and lead/support negotiations on EH&S matters.
- Maintain and enhance environmental management systems (e.g., Maximo) and develop data-driven dashboards (Power BI) for compliance tracking.
- Oversee emergency preparedness plans (Contingency, Risk Management, Emergency Response) and ensure timely updates.
- Monitor regulatory changes, provide input during rule making, and update company practices to maintain compliance.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and strengthen environmental performance.
- Bachelor's Degree and 8 years related experience or
- Master's Degree and 6 years related experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sustainability or related concentration and a minimum of 15 years related experience including experience with oversight of team responsible for waste management and chemicals, hazardous waste, PCB, e-waste and emerging contaminants, experience interacting and negotiating with regulatory agencies
- Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sustainability or related concentration and a minimum of 12 years related experience including experience with oversight of team responsible for waste management and chemicals, hazardous waste, PCB, e-waste and emerging contaminants, experience interacting and negotiating with regulatory agencies
- Must have strong knowledge and understanding of environmental, health and safety laws and regulations as well as experience working with regulatory agencies, required.
- Must be a highly motivated individual, demonstrate a strong commitment to Excellence and understand the vital importance of personal accountability, required.
- Must possess strong oral and written communication skills and have the ability to effectively interact with customers, support staff, regulatory agencies and various levels of management, required.
- Must be able to develop and implement effective EH&S programs utilizing data analytics as the core, required.
- Must have computer skills with the ability to learn in-house computer systems such as CRS, Maximo and Oracle, required.
- Strong supervisory experience and knowledge of administrative procedures, required.
- Must be able to manage a team of diverse expertise and ensure team goals are met, required.
- Experience of managing hazardous waste, PCB waste, solid waste program for utility or similar industry, preferred.
- Ability to inspire and develop staff
- Ability to lead/manage others
- Experience in a regulated environment
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Driver's License Required
- Sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
