See it differently

You see the world through a unique lens and that’s exactly what we need. We embrace how you see things differently – it’s essential for creating a sustainable future.

Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates to help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities.

The Opportunity
  • Prepare desk study reports on sites due for development

  • Use and manage subsurface information database systems

  • Observe construction site works and geotechnical investigations

  • Undertake geological mapping and rock mass classification on site

  • Log soil/rock materials and interpret subsurface conditions to aid design and determine the most appropriate method of construction

  • Write specifications for site investigation programs and prepare laboratory test schedules

  • Carry-out shallow and deep foundation design, slope stability calculations, and seismic assessments

  • Support the completion of temporary support-of-excavation designs, including for basements, shafts, and cut-and-cover tunnels/subway stations

  • Conduct preliminary ground movement predictions, hydrogeological impact and building damage assessments

  • Carry out empirical, analytical, and numerical analyses for purposes of tunnel and shaft design (initial support and final lining) for various tunnel construction methods such as drill and blast, sequential excavation method, or TBM bored

  • Interpret and organize design results into project documentation such as Technical Drawings, Interpretive, or Baseline Reports, or Basis of Design reports

  • Use tunnel design and rock mechanics software such as FLAC/FLAC3D, UDEC/3

DEC, Roc Science, or Frac Man

  • Undertake linear and non-linear structural analysis of shotcrete and concrete tunnel linings based on Code requirements using first principles or structural design software packages (SAP, GSA). Make use of automation and established workflows to follow best practice. Develop workflows and ideas for automation where none exist

  • Work in multidisciplinary teams (e.g. structural, civil, bridges & civil structures) for delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects for transportation, water/wastewater, or mining.

Is this role right for you?
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering/Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Underground Construction/Tunneling, or Mining Engineering.

  • Sound knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals, soil and rock mechanics, and tunneling methods

  • Good time-management habits, ability to multi-task, ability to sustain focus on long tasks

  • Ability to communicate thoughts and ideas in an accessible way – distill design tasks and solutions into concise text and presentation slides

  • Attitude of taking initiative, enthusiasm, eagerness to learn, teamwork, creativity

Preferred:
  • Master's or PhD in one of the above mentioned degrees

  • EIT/FE or GIT/PG

  • Advanced courses in foundations, soil mechanics, and rock mechanics

  • Numerical modelling skills using one of the finite element analysis software packages (e.g. Plaxis, LSDyna, FLAC/FLAC3D, UDEC/3

    DEC, RS2/3, MIDAS etc.)

  • Numerical analysis using one of the slope stability analysis software packages (Slope

    W, Slide, UTexas, etc.)

  • Computer programming, CAD, and visualization skills (Matlab, Python, Rhino, Autodesk, Micro Station, Leapfrog, etc)

  • Knowledge of common types of shallow and deep foundation and retaining structures, including installation methodology

  • Knowledge in geological and geotechnical interpretation with understanding of geological origin and process and how they influence ground behavior

  • Active in engineering community through professional societies

  • Evidence of personal investment in academic or extracurricular field

  • Past history of creative problem solving and communication of solutions through technical presentations or reports
