Mid-Level Bridge Engineer

GFT is seeking a Mid-Level Bridge Engineer to join our Northeast Transportation Team. This hybrid position will be based out of GFT’s New Jersey offices (Marlton or East Brunswick) or New York City office. Working on the bridge team at GFT offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity.

Responsibilities
  • Lead structural analyses, design, and quality reviews of bridge geometry and components.
  • Develop structure plans for bridges and other transportation structures such as culverts, retaining walls, utility vaults, noise abatement walls, pedestrian bridges, and sign structures.
  • Prepare and review construction contract documents, including specifications, cost estimates, and shop drawings.
  • Serve as a technical mentor to junior and supporting staff, and contribute to internal knowledge sharing and best practices.
  • Take on a lead technical role in the planning, design, and delivery of structural projects that strengthen regional mobility.
  • Coordinate with roadway, geotechnical, and traffic disciplines; collaborate directly with project managers and public agency clients.
  • Help shape solutions that advance multimodal connectivity and community value.
  • Participate in design‑build and accelerated construction initiatives.
  • Serve as a task lead and mentor junior engineers.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structures.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in designing roadway infrastructure.
  • Understanding of standard engineering practices, techniques, and applicable codes.
  • Experience in new bridge design, bridge rehabilitation, load ratings, and/or inspection of bridges.
  • Proficiency with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
  • Knowledge of plan development with CADD (Micro Station and/or AutoCAD).
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, demonstrate initiative, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with New Jersey Department of Transportation and/or New Jersey Turnpike Authority projects, including familiarity with client design policies, standards and specifications.
  • Experience with Bentley Open Bridge Designer (LEAPSteel), CSiBridge, and AASHTOWare BrR.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.
  • Willingness to learn from peers and encourage reciprocal learning among team members.
