NYPL is working to reduce building emissions by 49% by 2025 and 86% by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels), culminating in full decarbonization by 2050. The Energy Team works to track overall energy usage and identify energy-saving opportunities in buildings, implement energy-efficient operations and maintenance (O&M) practices, and oversee the delivery of energy-efficiency retrofit projects.
The Energy Engineer provides direction and oversight on operation and maintenance activities across the New York Public Library’s portfolio of real estate to ensure all locations are operating efficiently. The Energy Engineer will work with outside vendors and project managers on designing, specifying, programming and integrating new and existing building management systems (BMS). The position requires a technical understanding of HVAC systems, diligent recordkeeping and other administrative duties related to maintaining an efficient and professional Facility Operations team.

Assess the current state and provide risk analysis of City facilities to develop recommendations for building optimization and energy efficiency. Develop project scope of work through surveys and site visits and prepare energy project funding proposals and supporting documents (i.e., materials that calculate estimated energy savings, cost savings, emissions reductions, and other benefits expected from energy projects).
- Provide technical assessments, design review, and M&V. Perform engineering calculations and energy modeling to verify the reasonableness and accuracy of estimated energy usage reductions, energy cost savings, and avoided emissions for proposed energy efficiency projects. Assess construction design information such as detail and assembly drawings, design calculations, system layouts and sketches, or specifications.
