Overview
Job Title: Unified Communications Engineer (Infrastructure)
Duration: 12+ Month Contract (possibility of conversion to fte in the future)
Reports To: Director, Unified Communications
Location: New York, NY
Position SummaryThe Senior Unified Communications Engineer is responsible for the implementation, deployment, maintenance, and support of telephony systems, trading turrets, and telecommunications networks. This role ensures high availability of all unified communications platforms and supports critical business operations.
Key Responsibilities- Design, implement, manage, monitor, troubleshoot, and support unified communications networks and equipment, including:
- Desk telephones
- Trading turrets
- Phone and voicemail systems
- Voice recording systems
- Manage vendor relationships, including procurement of new equipment and services.
- Liaise with business partners and telecom operations for new and existing connectivity.
- Monitor and manage inventory of leased lines and direct voice lines.
- Ensure 100% system uptime during and outside business hours.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation and network diagrams.
- Install and maintain telecom wiring and data center equipment, including rack installation and cabling (ability to lift up to 50 pounds required).
- Provide off-hours and remote support as needed.
- Travel between New York and New Jersey offices as required.
- Lead projects including project definition, planning, resource allocation, and post-implementation reviews.
- Serve as the final escalation point for service desk telecom-related issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, technical discipline, computer science, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience supporting telephony in mission-critical environments.
- Expertise with IPC Unigy and Cisco Unified Communications Manager.
- Experience with voicemail and voice recording systems.
- Strong knowledge of Cisco IOS (Voice Gateways, switching).
- Understanding of telephony protocols (SIP, H.323, MGCP, SCCP) and concepts such as PBXs, dial plans, VoIP, QoS, and ring-down lines.
- Familiarity with telecom line types: DID trunks, SIP, ISDN PRI/BRI, FXS/FXO, POTS, ARD/MRD, hoot & holler.
- Experience in leased-line ordering, tracking, and provisioning.
- Ability to perform in fast-paced environments supporting real-time market data and trading operations.
- Vendor-neutral or vendor-specific certification/training preferred.
- Basic administration skills in Windows and Linux operating systems.
- Scripting and automation experience is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills, both standard and creative approaches.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, time management, and organizational abilities.
