Overview
Standard Carbon is a climate infrastructure company deploying the Carbon Bridge™, a modular, containerized carbon-to-fuel platform that captures CO₂ from on-site combustion exhaust and converts it into pipeline-grade renewable natural gas using renewable electricity. The Carbon Bridge integrates carbon capture, electrolysis, methanation, and thermal recovery into a single, retrofit-ready system designed for dense urban environments like New York City.
Standard Carbon works directly with building owners, utilities, regulators, and contractors to deliver real emissions reductions, regulatory compliance, and durable energy value.
Role OverviewThe Senior Mechanical Project Engineer is the technical owner of Carbon Bridge deployments in NYC
. This role is responsible for taking projects from early technical diligence through permitting, utility coordination, installation, commissioning, and handoff to operations
.
You will manage the mechanical and energy system integration of the Carbon Bridge into existing buildings and facilities—coordinating with regulators (DOB, DEP, FDNY), utilities (Con Edison, National Grid), incentive programs, installers, and internal product teams. This is a hands-on execution role for an engineer who understands how complex systems actually get built in New York City
.
- Own end-to-end mechanical execution of Carbon Bridge™ deployments, from site feasibility through commissioning and turnover
- Translate Carbon Bridge™ product specifications into site-specific mechanical, electrical, thermal, and process integration designs
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for building owners, engineers of record, contractors, and inspectors
- Design and coordinate integration with existing:
- Boilers, CHP systems, combustion exhaust stacks
- Gas infrastructure (on-site use and/or pipeline injection)
- Electrical service (high-load electrolyzer systems)
- Cooling, ventilation, and water systems
- Review and approve equipment layouts, tie-ins, clearances, noise, access, and serviceability for containerized installations
- Lead or support permitting strategy and execution with:
- NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)
- FDNY
- NYC DEP / NYSDEC (as applicable)
- Utilities (Con Edison, National Grid)
- Coordinate with RDPs, expediters, and consultants to move filings efficiently through NYC review processes
- Ensure compliance with NYC Building Code, Mechanical Code, Fire Code, fuel gas regulations, and site-specific constraints
- Manage electric service upgrades, load studies, and interconnection coordination for high-power electrolysis systems
- Coordinate gas interconnection, metering, and operating requirements for renewable natural gas export or on-site use
- Support energy rate, demand management, and dispatch strategy coordination tied to Carbon Bridge™ operation
- Support technical eligibility and documentation for:
- NYSERDA programs
- Utility incentives
- Emissions and decarbonization compliance pathways
- Provide mechanical and operational inputs required for incentive applications (without acting as the program administrator)
- Oversee mechanical installation, sequencing, and field execution with contractors and vendors
- Participate in site walks, inspections, punch lists, and acceptance testing
- Lead or support commissioning of capture, electrolysis, methanation, thermal recovery, and balance-of-plant systems
- Help develop repeatable mechanical standards, details, and deployment playbooks as Carbon Bridge™ scales across NYC
- Provide feedback to product and engineering teams based on field experience
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in New York State (Mechanical or related discipline strongly preferred)
- 7+ years of experience delivering complex mechanical or energy infrastructure projects in NYC
- Direct experience with NYC DOB permitting
, inspections, and construction workflows - Strong background in HVAC, industrial process systems, energy systems, or large-scale retrofits
- Experience…
