HDR is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Transportation Business Group in NY/NJ. They will typically work under and with Senior Geotechnical staff and be responsible for the geotechnical analysis and design or the interpretation and understanding of subsurface conditions of infrastructure projects including but not limited to roadways, retaining walls, bridges, buildings, dams, soils and rock slopes, etc.

Opportunities will exist to participate on high profile infrastructure projects in the Northeast and across the United States. They will also develop subsurface investigation and laboratory testing plans, review boring logs and laboratory data, and design plans for a variety of geotechnical tasks such as slope stability, driven piles and drilled shafts, and also provide project specific analysis/evaluation for sites with seismic considerations, including slide remediation, ground improvement, and others.

They will prepare geotechnical reports and also expect to coordinate with project managers to implement measures to successfully meet all project goals and objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Travel throughout New York and New Jersey for site visits, project meetings, investigation layout and observation.
  • Set up field exploration programs and coordinate with subcontractors.
  • Conduct field inspections of construction activities, including earthwork and foundation installations.
  • Be capable of working independently or in a team environment assisting senior geotechnical staff.
  • Perform assignments exercising judgement in evaluation, selection, and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in Civil Engineering
  • BS in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related technical discipline required
  • 5 years of geotechnical‑related engineering experience
  • Must have a knowledge of soil and rock mechanics.
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the NY/NJ area
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills
  • Local candidates are preferred
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example:
    Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
