Duties
  • Field Office

    Activities:

    Completes and verifies lengths, areas, and volume to support authorization of payments to the contractor and performs other technical and engineering‑related office functions and paperwork as required.
  • Earthwork Inspection: Inspects contractor’s operations in building earth or rock embankments serving as pavement foundations; conducts gradation, compaction, and moisture content tests; checks layer thickness and adequacy of compaction equipment.
  • Concrete Inspection (on‑site): Inspects contractor’s concrete placement for pavements and bridge piers; conducts air‑content, slump, and cylinder (load‑test) tests; evaluates handling, finishing, curing, and paving train for smooth pavement.
  • Structural Inspection: Inspects contractor’s steel erection; verifies correct placement; inspects field welds and steel painting.
  • Drainage Inspection: Inspects culvert, sewer, ditch installations; ensures safe excavation, proper alignment and grade, correct ‘bed’ material placement, and properly compacted backfill.
  • Asphalt Pavement Inspection: Inspects asphalt placement; verifies temperature, lift thickness, and proper compaction.
  • Other: A valid New York State motor‑vehicle license is required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Transportation Construction Inspector 1
    • A. One construction season (≥ 3 months) of experience in highway, bridge or civil‑engineering construction inspection.
    • B. Completion of at least one semester (≥ 12 semester‑credit hours) of college coursework in an associate‑degree program in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, engineering science, surveying technology, drafting/CAD, or heavy‑equipment operations.
    • C. Completion of at least one semester (≥ 12 semester‑credit hours) of college coursework in a bachelor’s‑degree program in engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences or technology, construction management, supervision, engineering management, construction engineering or technology, transportation planning, mathematics, physical science, architecture or architectural technology, landscape architecture, surveying, physics, geology or forestry.
  • Transportation Construction Inspector 2
    • D. Two separate construction seasons (≥ 6 months total) of experience in highway, bridge or civil‑engineering construction inspection.
    • E. Completion of an associate‑degree program in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, engineering science, surveying technology, drafting/CAD, or heavy‑equipment operations.
    • F. Completion of at least 2 years (≥ 54 semester‑credit hours) of bachelor’s‑degree coursework in the fields listed in (C).
    • G. One construction season of experience plus a minimum of 27 semester‑credit hours of coursework in an associate’s or bachelor’s program as described in (E) or (F).
  • Transportation Construction Inspector 3
    • H. TCI 2s who complete 6 months as a TCI 2 or 3 months plus 27 additional bachelor’s‑degree credit hours progress to TCI 3.
    • I. Three separate construction seasons (≥ 9 months total) of experience.
  • NOTE:

    Degrees or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or recognized by the NYS Education Department. Outside US institutions must provide independent verification of equivalency.
