The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000-square-mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories, and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities.
The Industrial Resource Management and Permitting Section is responsible for implementing the federally mandated Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP), preparing reports as required by State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permits, and approving various discharges to the combined sewer system. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
* Assist in the review of proposals for the discharge of groundwater and wastewater, and in drafting approvals.
* Participate in research related to pollutant source track-down for mitigation in the Mercury and PCB Minimization Programs, as required by SPDES permits.
* Participate in site inspections of significant industrial users (SIUs) and assist assistant engineers in reviewing SIUs' report submittals.
* Contribute to various tasks required by the IPP.
In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.

Minimum Qualifications
As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE:
Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
Preferred Skills
* Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the undergraduate level majoring in environmental, civil or chemical engineering - Student must have at least a 2.5
GPA (on a 4.0 scale) - Student must have at least a junior class standing Selection Criteria:
- Strong writing skills - Effective interpersonal skills - Research capabilities - Familiarity and/or experience with computers/software MS Office 365 - Leadership skills - Self-motivation - Ability to work well with minimal supervision.
