Location: New York

Chief Marine Engineer

Under the general direction of the Senior Port Engineer or superior officer, supervises and directs the operation of the main propulsion and auxiliary equipment of diesel or diesel‑electric powered ferry boats; ensures compliance with agency standard operating procedures, standing orders, and applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and direct all members of the below‑deck team.
  • Direct the operation, maintenance, and minor or emergency repair of main propulsion equipment, boilers, auxiliaries, electrical equipment, steering pumps, and fuel, oil, urea and waste tanks on Staten Island Ferry boats.
  • Perform duties of inspection officer and team leader below deck.
  • Direct the care, storage, and use of fuel on board.
  • Ensure machinery and auxiliary systems are operated in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping, Staten Island Ferry safety management system, and NYC DOT regulations.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid license for Chief Engineer of Motor Vessels of any horsepower issued by the U.S. Coast Guard Inspection Service or an equivalent license.
  • At least 0–1 year of experience in the title of Chief Marine Engineer (or equivalent).
Required Credentials
  • Merchant Marine Credential (MMC) with endorsement and medical certificate, maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by TSA, maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Medical examination and drug screening as required by U.S. Coast Guard regulations; subject to random drug and alcohol testing during employment.

  • Position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55‑a Program.
  • New York City residency is not required.
Work Details

Hours/Shift: 40 hours/variable, including nights and weekends.

Pay Scale
  • 0–1 year in title: $145,799
  • 1–2 years in title: $154,522
  • 2–3 years in title: $167,511
  • 3–4 years in title: $175,473
  • 4+ years in title: $180,281
