What We’re Looking For
At HNTB, we are seeking an experienced technical leader to research, implement, and manage estimating tools and best practices for complex infrastructure projects. The role requires deep cost‑estimating expertise, accurate projection of project costs, and oversight of independent, definitive, and parametric cost estimates at any stage of project definition.
What You’ll Do- Oversee the preparation of independent cost estimates for submitted change order proposals.
- Provide cost support during Value Engineering studies and design charrettes.
- Create complex cost models for estimating elements and develop duration estimates for construction activities.
- Conduct parametric order‑of‑magnitude estimating to establish probable project costs early in the design process.
- Analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, bills of material, and sample layouts to estimate labor, material, and equipment costs using pricing schedules and historical data.
- Provide quality control and assurance for quantity takeoffs and cost estimates, checking for mathematical and technical accuracy.
- Consult with clients, vendors, and other departments to formulate quantity take‑offs and resolve issues.
- Work closely with project supervisors to ensure estimates meet financial and regulatory guidelines.
- Prepare bid estimates used in reviewing construction contractor bids and support price negotiations.
- Set up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures.
- Prepare cost reports and present findings to design and client teams, and participate in client presentations as required.
- Collaborate with scheduling teams to develop bottom‑up cost estimates aligned with construction schedules.
- Develop and maintain enterprise‑level estimating policies, procedures, guidelines, and desk manuals.
- Ensure consistency of estimating methods and data use across all projects.
- Provide guidance on the use of estimating software, including protocols and standards.
- Accumulate, evaluate, and document historical cost data and construction methods to maintain up‑to‑date estimating standards.
- Oversee a database of estimation data recorded from each job.
- Support the preparation of procurement documents related to estimating specifications.
- Collaborate with the risk team to align risk register items with project risk profiles.
- Lead multiple estimating projects as needed and serve as a technical lead for Estimators I, II, and III.
- Perform other related cost‑estimating and budgeting functions as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 9 years of relevant experience in cost estimation, or 13 years of experience if a degree is not held.
- AACE Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) or equivalent.
- ASPE Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or equivalent.
- Experience preparing cost estimates on behalf of general contractors using commercial estimating software.
- Experience in two or more phases of the project life cycle (e.g., predesign, design, procurement, construction, post‑construction).
- Experience working as a client’s PM/CM agent or part of a design‑build contractor.
- Ability to report to the Project Office and Job Site located in Manhattan.
