Project Management Trainee – Special Projects – LIRR – Various locations – 100% hourly rate $38.46 – Safety Sensitive – Union BRS-241 – Open until Filled.

About LIRR

Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, it served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles, from New York City to Montauk, Long Island.

Job Summary

The Project Management Trainee is an entry‑level training position responsible for assisting with the coordination and administration of technical studies, design, and construction projects, and LIRR business and construction activities associated with various West End projects. The trainee receives on‑the‑job and classroom training to develop project management, coordination, controls, scheduling, and estimating skills. The program is two years; upon completion, the trainee is placed in an entry‑level project management related position.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Observe, learn, and implement general project management roles and responsibilities, procedures, protocols, and controls related to project development, coordination, scheduling, estimating, quality, and safety.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Accept responsibility and demonstrate initiative to learn and be productive.
  • Participate in planning, reviewing, and implementing LIRR projects, including sole benefit projects, joint projects with Amtrak, Overbuild and Development Projects, and East Side Access Project.
  • Learn and apply the content of various Amtrak, East Side Access and Overbuild Project Agreements.
  • Participate in estimating, scheduling, planning, and pre‑construction activities.
  • Review reports, studies, specifications and drawings; maintain documents; assist in preparing reports, presentations, research, and studies.
  • Assist in maintaining liaison between project management team members, internal railroad departments and external organizations.
  • Perform other assignments as requested by management.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, Business or related field.
  • Business/administrative skills (report writing, letter writing, filing, meeting minutes, spreadsheets).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to read and understand technical reports, studies, specifications and construction drawings/plans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior construction project coordination experience.
  • Self‑motivation.
  • Willingness to assume a high degree of responsibility and meet deadlines.
Wage Progression

Step 1 – Entrance to 6 months: $33.23
Step 2 – 6 to 12 months: $34.89
Step 3 – 12 to 18 months: $36.63
Step 4 – 18 months: $38.46
