Research Scientist
Role Purpose
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled scientist to join our innovative Inorganic Material Mechanics team in Product Reliability Technology directorate. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled scientist with a strong background in mechanical, or materials engineering to advance the development of fundamental mechanical behavior models, reliability methodologies, and characterization techniques for glass, glass – ceramics, ceramics and thin optical films.
As part of Corning’s core research organization, you will support development of cutting‑edge solutions that support our key business units like Optical Communications, Mobile Consumer Electronics, and Advanced Optics. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of science and technology to solve the world’s toughest materials challenges. Joining our team means you will have access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities, a collaborative and innovative environment, and opportunities to make an impact across diverse industries.
Key Responsibilities- Use knowledge of physics and probabilistic methods to build deep understanding of the materials and processes across all of Corning’s Market Access Platforms, as well as Research and Development
- Apply solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, material science, numerical methods, and/or reliability analysis to solve early‑stage problems, make product recommendations, improve product designs, and understand/predict product performance creatively and proactively
- Develop experiments to understand mechanical behavior of various components and thus enhance overall product reliability. Experimental validation of models through development and testing through surrogate tests. Mechanical characterization of various materials, especially brittle materials, to evaluate the fundamental properties or mechanical response
- Design and/or synthesize materials for desired mechanical/reliability requirements for IP, inventions, exploratory work, and/or to test hypothesis and improve system understanding
- Use existing tools and develop new experimental, analytical, and numerical models to resolve customer problems
- Partner closely with other simulation and experimental scientists/engineers across research, development, and engineering organizations
- Communicate results, both orally and in written form, in clear, precise English
- Protect Corning’s intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent application in timely fashion
- Document important findings in internal and external structured reports
- Master’s or PhD degree in Applied Physics / Material Science and Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Aerospace Engineering / Engineering Mechanics / Applied Mathematics or related discipline required
- 2-5 years’ experience in Experimental mechanics, material science and engineering, and/or Numerical Simulations
- Experience in designing experiments and/or characterization methods, leveraging experimental methods for mechanical understanding
- Experience in probabilistic methods, Bayesian methods, optimization, and/or machine learning
- Experience in material science, potentially including design and synthesis of new materials
- In‑depth understanding of model calibration, verification & validation, updating and prediction, sensitivity
- Experimental/lab experience (designing and/or executing experiments, troubleshooting experimental setups, using modeling and experimental results to solve problems)
- Strong foundation in physics and engineering science
- Creative, proactive, and innovative problem solving
- Results oriented and high commitment / energy
- Experience using, and programming in, numerical simulation software
- ABAQUS, COMSOL, MOOSE, ANSYS, FEniCS, or other finite element software
- Custom codes, analytical approaches
