Job Description Summary
Test, commission, troubleshoot, service, maintain and upgrade the General Electric equipment and its components. Support Service & Design requirements in active service projects and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) installation in support of customer and business requirements.
Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Variable Frequency Transformer (VFT) and FACTS technology in the U.S. Undertake detailed design reviews and risk assessment of the engineering deliverables submitted by all subcontractors, internal and external. Serve as single point of contact for technical issues for the customer and project manager.
Provide critical feedback to the Project Engineering Team to ensure technical quality, feasibility, completeness, and constructability of the design. Participate in engineering design reviews and provide critical commentary on risks to the project schedule and constructability. Provide insights on the VFT controls and drives upgrade and participate in developing a knowledge base for the technology.
Perform and assist in field work for commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting on VFT & FACTS installation and products including power electronic valves, synchronous machine, switch gear equipment, cooling system and control systems. Remotely assist clients to investigate VFT & FACTS installation failures or problems.
Assist the Business Development activities by establishing a database for the VFT technology to assist customers with maintenance and operation after the controls and drives upgrades and ensure continuity of the technology. Assist FACTS engineers with factory testing of power electronics components and controls systems. Evaluate and develop improved equipment testing procedures to maximize reliability, maintainability and field installation constraints.
Identify impending obsolescence issues to Engineering management for action. Supervise upgrades of various components of FACTS system. Travel to manufacturing locations to inspect work and mark up drawings as required, witness and review test work, assist in resolving manufacturing problems.
Perform various type of studies and analysis to understand the root cause of failures and malfunction of FACTS installation. Work on developing proposals including writing and/or reviewing technical specifications, estimating materials, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations, directing designers and draftsmen on drawing requirements, and the development of clarifications and exceptions as well as technical responses.
Qualifications / Requirements- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related.
- Eight (8) years of experience in power system design, MV/HV electrical systems, or a combination thereof.
- Five (5) years of experience modifying or troubleshooting control algorithms in PLC Controllers, including Mark6e controllers.
- High power generation site commissioning experience as field engineer and commissioning leader.
- Sub‑station protection testing and related commissioning experience.
- Low‑voltage DC‑AC converters for generator excitation or industrial motor control.
- Testing control cabinets with a Real Time Simulator.
- Supporting operation of Variable Frequency Transformers (VFTs) and related auxiliary systems.
This position allows for a hybrid work arrangement. Candidates may work remotely two (2) days per week, within 50 miles of company location in Saratoga Springs, NY. Approximately 40% travel (domestic and international) to unanticipated customer sites, project sites and manufacturing locations to support project installation and commissioning phases; to inspect and test work; and to address root cause analysis. Employer will pay travel expenses.
