Location: New York

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout its 2,000‑square‑mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Watershed Maintainer within the Strategic Operations and Research Directorate, located in Grahamsville, New York, under the supervision of the Supervisor of Water Supply Control Center (WSCC).

Duties
  • Monitor the SCADA system conditions for water supply reservoirs and associated facilities, responding to alarms, making adjustments, and monitoring reservoir stream releases, water supply diversions, and target flows.
  • Read meters and gauges and perform valve changes as directed.
  • Complete and maintain all necessary paperwork, including logbooks and flow records.
  • Notify supervisory staff of negative issues.
  • Perform general custodial duties within the Control room.
  • Monitor the reservoir system, aqueduct network, seven wastewater treatment plants, and administrative facilities.
  • Assist the WSCC Supervisor in daily activities and support the water supply system, maintaining situational awareness and operational oversight during shifts and after hours if needed.
  • Utilize the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and other tools to monitor and manage the operation of the water supply reservoirs and related facilities.
License Requirement

A valid Motor Vehicle Driver License in the State of New York, maintained for the duration of employment.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

Lifting objects up to waist height; handling tools and equipment; pushing and pulling objects; reaching to arm‑length; balancing on foot stools or ladders from 3 to 30 ft; wearing protective equipment (gloves, boots, goggles, earplugs, face shields, respirators); working in temperatures from 0 °F to 105 °F, varying humidity; operating in the presence of toxic or corrosive chemicals; operating in restricted spaces; required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Hours and Shift

40 hours per week with shift work including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Work Location

7870 State Road 42, Grahamsville, NY 12740 (approximately 107 mi northwest of New York City).

Minimum Qualifications
  • A four‑year high school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of full‑time satisfactory experience in operation and maintenance of equipment used in controlling or purifying water at watershed facilities, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems.
  • Two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyman or helper in electrical or mechanical trades, or as a technician in a chemical processing facility or laboratory.
  • Valid motor vehicle driver license in the State of New York.
