The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.
Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description SummaryThe Engineer - Level A, B or C is a registered Professional Engineer reporting to a Managing Engineer, Managing Architect, higher-level Engineer or Architect and is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, to achieve the objectives of the Authority. The Professional Engineer should have knowledge in design and implementation of the New York City permitting process, including the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) design and approval process to address state and local regulations regarding management of stormwater runoff during, and post construction.
The candidate shall also have good knowledge to assist mitigating water infiltration into existing buildings. They should have knowledge and ability to assist with the scoping and design of the envelope of existing buildings.
Engineer – A
Perform civil engineering design and field inspection work across a variety of assignments and technical roles. Gather, review, and survey data to identify site and utility features to be addressed during the design process. Prepare geotechnical testing guidelines and conduct percolation tests. Design stormwater management systems in compliance with Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) regulations and prepare supporting documentation for the permitting process.
Coordinate and implement best management practices for stormwater control. Design and prepare all applicable DEP applications, including site connection, cross-connection, and SWPPP submissions. Inspect premises, witness soil testing, evaluate water infiltration through foundation walls, and prepare detailed reports. Review prior plans, drawings, and specifications related to construction, demolition, or structural alterations to ensure compliance with SWPPP requirements, local laws, rules, and regulations.
Review and contribute to both rehabilitation and new building design projects. Prepare and/or supervise the development of scope documents, pre-schematic and schematic designs, preliminary studies, construction documents, reports, plans, and specifications. Collaborate with technical, professional, managerial, and support staff, as well as consultants, contractors, vendors, and government agencies. Serve as project lead on select, less complex design and construction projects, such as school modernizations, additions, leased spaces, and CIP projects.
Review contractor submittals and shop drawings, and conduct design reviews for rehabilitation and new construction work. Maintain and expand knowledge of architectural and engineering principles. Sign, seal, and file engineering drawings as required.
Engineer – B

A. Conduct QA/QC reviews of all SWPPP plans and applications to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with DEP requirements.
