CIVIL ENGINEERING INTERN - 20202
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees.
DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently manages a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35 billion, with an additional $13.6 billion projected over the next 10‑year commitment plan.
The In‑House Design (IHD) directorate provides design and engineering services that meet operations’ needs while upholding BEDC’s core values of safety, schedule, quality, and customer service. IHD supports projects from the initial phase through preliminary design, procurement, construction, and turnover to operations. Its disciplines include Architectural, Site Civil, Structural, Process Mechanical/HVAC, Water Tunnel Mechanical Systems, and Electrical.
The Structural section continues DEP’s legacy of designing and managing the construction of New York City’s water supply and wastewater infrastructure. Using finite element modeling and other modern techniques, it prepares bid documents, drawings, specifications, and structural calculations for tunnels, shafts, chambers, pump stations, treatment plants, and other facilities. It also provides design services during construction (DSDC) and advises other IHD sections.
BEDC seeks two Civil Engineering Interns to support the Structural section at the Lefrak Office in Queens, NY. Under direct supervision of the Lead Design Engineer, selected candidates will assist in capital projects by preparing engineering documents—including drawings, calculations, and specifications—for water supply and wastewater facilities. Responsibilities include site development, shop drawing review, change order documentation, project schedule assistance, and coordination with stakeholders.
Only candidates with permanent Civil Service status as a Civil Engineering Intern or who have taken the DCAS Civil Service Exam for Civil Engineering Intern (Exam No. 6116) are eligible to apply. Please do not apply if you do not meet this requirement.
