- Assistant Civil Engineer
Serves as Assistant Civil Engineer in the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspection and Operations, Division of Bridges. The Division is responsible for maintaining the safety, reliability, and long‑term serviceability of New York City’s bridge infrastructure. Within the Division, Bridge Management plays a central role connecting inspection findings, load rating results, asset inventory data, deterioration modeling, and capital planning to identify structures requiring rehabilitation, replacement, posting, restrictions, or inclusion in future capital programs.
Under supervision, the selected candidate will perform complex analysis of bridge load rating calculations in accordance with load rating policies, procedures and Federal and State load rating directives. They will perform the required structural analysis for the City‑Owned Bridges to ensure their safety against the heavy weight trucks and cranes. They will also perform field inspection of bridges to assess the condition and obtain information for project scoping as part of Request for Proposals (RFP) for the procurement of design consultants.
They will review budgetary plans for bridge rehabilitation projects. The selected engineer will be flexible to work on the tasks described above depending on workload.
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
- Possession of an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification is highly desirable.
- Strong foundational grasp of structural engineering and basic civil infrastructure concepts.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, NYSDOT Bridge Manual, and NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Manual is preferred.
- Knowledge of computer software such as AASHTOWare Bridge Rating, STAAD Pro, LARSA, and any other related software programs is preferred.
