Position: Senior Staff Controls Engineer
Location: New York

Seeking an experienced Senior Staff Controls Engineer to join a global manufacturing and technology organization focused on developing advanced process automation, industrial control systems, and next-generation manufacturing solutions.

This is a senior-level engineering role responsible for the design, development, implementation, and long-term support of industrial control systems used within complex manufacturing environments. The successful candidate will lead automation projects from concept through deployment, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable, safe, and high-performing manufacturing systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead engineering projects focused on the design, implementation, commissioning, and optimization of industrial control and automation systems.
  • Design, configure, program, and validate PLC-based control systems, including control logic, I/O architecture, motion control, alarming, safety systems, and diagnostics.
  • Develop and maintain HMI, SCADA, and operator interface solutions that enhance usability, troubleshooting capabilities, and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance, and manufacturing teams to define control system requirements and develop effective automation solutions.
  • Lead and participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), startup, commissioning, and system validation activities.
  • Troubleshoot complex automation and control system issues using structured problem-solving methodologies and data-driven analysis.
  • Support integration of sensors, instrumentation, machine vision systems, robotics, and industrial communication networks.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, software standards, system specifications, and operating procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability, process performance, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and project team members.
  • Support technology transfer activities from development and pilot environments into full-scale manufacturing operations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in controls engineering, automation engineering, or industrial systems engineering.
  • Strong understanding of PLC programming concepts, industrial automation, and control system architecture.
  • Experience with industrial control platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, or equivalent systems.
  • Understanding of industrial sensors, actuators, instrumentation, and I/O systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics and control system documentation.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required to support project execution and commissioning activities.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols including Ether Net/IP, Profinet, Modbus, and related networks.
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards, safety PLCs, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Experience working within manufacturing, industrial processing, or automated production environments.
  • Exposure to motion control systems, robotics, servo drives, and machine vision technologies.
  • Experience leading equipment startup, commissioning, and automation deployment projects.
  • Familiarity with process control systems and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives.
