Position OverviewThe Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) seeks to hire four Assistant Civil Engineers for the Site Connection Unit within the Division of Engineering, Connections and Permitting. The role involves reviewing and approving site and house connection proposals for commercial and residential properties across the five boroughs, ensuring compliance with DEP standards and regulations while supporting the city’s increased affordable housing and accessory dwelling unit initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Review site and house connection proposals submitted by professional engineers and registered architects.
- Perform hydraulic calculations to determine the size of sewer connections and evaluate proposed release rates for compliance with the Unified Storm Water Rule and zoning requirements.
- Examine surveys and supporting documents to ensure adherence to DEP rules, regulations, standards, and specifications.
- Research sewer records and drainage plans for accuracy of site connection proposals before certification.
- Utilize city tools such as zoning maps, tax maps, and ArcGIS to analyze site area characteristics.
- Apply water resource principles to determine maximum sewer pipe capacity, allowable flow rates, and alternatives for stormwater retention or release.
- Collaborate with professional engineers to discuss and determine optimal solutions under strict approval circumstances.
- Approve moderate to complex permit applications for new sewer connections and related repair, relay, and plug permits for residential and commercial properties.
- Coordinate with professional engineers and developers to resolve engineering issues and meet DEP’s objectives.
- Baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
- Or, baccalaureate degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Knowledge of hydraulics.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
