Area Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Lead (192926)

HDR is seeking a NY/NJ Bridge Inspection Program Lead to head our NY/NJ Bridge Inspection Program. The candidate will lead the continued development of our bridge and tunnel inspection program including planning staff training and development; maintaining program quality; supporting workload planning and coordination; identifying business opportunities and leading pursuits; and maintaining relationships with clients and business partners. The role will also be required to serve as Project Manager and/or Quality Control Reviewer for bridge, tunnel, and/or structural inspection projects.

The candidate may conduct National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) inspections as team leader, write field inspection reports, and perform calculations. Field inspections will be performed from ground level, hydraulic equipment, ladder access, or using rope access techniques. Occasional office engineering may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Manage area bridge and tunnel inspection programs (NY/NJ) and select national bridge and tunnel projects.
  • Develop Quality Assurance requirements and procedures for the inspection program.
  • Perform Quality Control reviews for bridge inspection submissions.
  • Identify business opportunities and lead marketing efforts for proposals.
  • Lead bridge inspection teams, develop inspection reports, perform load ratings and other structural calculations.
  • Work with other disciplines within the office as necessary during inspection downtime.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license; travel for multiple nights during the week.
  • Perform field inspections of in‑service bridge and culvert structures, tunnel structures, highway structures, overhead sign structures, hydraulic structures, and metal traffic signal poles. Physical demands include: extension ladder positioning, small boat maneuvering, long‑distance driving, confined space, air travel, occasional work at night or weekend, walking long distances on uneven surfaces.
  • Work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrate leadership, communication, and ability to work with multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Expose to environmental hazards such as warm/cold temperatures, water, work‑at‑height, confined spaces, poisonous plants, snakes, ticks, spiders, and other field animals.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS in Civil Engineering required.
  • MS in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • 10+ years bridge/structural inspection and design experience.
  • Demonstrated business development and strategic planning skills.
  • NHI 130055 Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges Training.
  • NHI 130053 Bridge Inspector Refresher Training.
  • NHI 130078 Inspection of Fracture Critical Steel Bridges Training.
  • NHI 130110 Tunnel Safety Inspection Training.
  • NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Practices and Procedures Course.
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Certification Level II or III.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • Mobile Elevating Working Platform (MEWP) Operator Certification for scissor lifts, manlifts, under‑bridge inspection vehicles (UBIV).
  • UAS Pilot (FAA Part 107 certification) with structural inspection experience.
  • Experience in BMS asset management software/systems.
  • Experience in load rating software.
  • Preference for local candidates.
Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of 10 years bridge design experience.
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position (e.g., Professional Engineer (PE) or P.Eng).
  • Proven hands‑on experience in all aspects of bridge design projects.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu and engineering software packages such as LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB‑Multi Pier, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, MDX, SAP
    2000, CSiBridge, RM Bridge, sp Column, STLBridgeLRFD or STLBridge.
  • Knowledge of ADINA, LUSAS, Bentley Open Bridge Designer and Open Bridge Modeler, and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Micro Station, AutoCAD, MathCAD, LARSA, Prestress Concrete Design.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team ability.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Comfortable as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design with proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects.
  • Active participant of the employee‑owned culture required.
