Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager-HVAC Operations. The Manager will supervise all activities of the HVAC shops, including direct oversight of 2 foremen and up to 24 mechanics and helpers. The role is responsible for code compliance of all HVAC equipment, overseeing the operation, maintenance, and reliability of heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems across the hospital campus, and ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient HVAC performance to support patient care, clinical operations, infection control, and regulatory requirements.

Job Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s service standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
  • Work planning and long‑term goals: assists in planning and development of staff to address current problems and anticipated future issues, and participates in departmental work planning and goal setting for short‑term work efforts and long‑term projects such as capital improvement.
  • Maintenance of engineering equipment: assists with continuous operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, manages emergency problems, breakdowns, and other unanticipated events that affect patients, staff, and visitors life safety.
  • Project management: in conjunction with the Director of Energy, Operations Managers, and Project Managers, an outside consultant manages in‑house HVAC projects.
  • Staffing, supervision, and development of shop personnel: assists Director of Operations to maintain a high‑quality staffing level of the shop, provides performance evaluation and personnel counseling, and assists with shop budget preparation.
  • Supervision of staff activities: responsible for the action and work of staff members in the HVAC and Building Automation shops.
  • Scheduling of staff: assists in establishing work hours of employees, including overtime, vacation approvals, sick time and vacation coverage needs, and monitors foremen shop performance.
  • Oversee daily operation, preventive maintenance, and repair of hospital HVAC systems, including air handlers, fan coils, air compressors, steam stations, and exhaust fans.
  • Work with the foreman and HVAC mechanics to order materials needed for maintenance.
  • Coordinate equipment shutdowns with space occupants and Infection Prevention and Control for the equipment maintenance to be performed.
  • Support construction projects by coordinating HVAC tracing, shutdowns, and capital recharges.
  • Respond to HVAC emergencies and system failures, providing after‑hours and on‑call support as required.
  • Monitor system performance and energy usage; identify opportunities for optimization and cost savings.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support ongoing technical training and certification.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare and life safety standards, including the Joint Commission (TJC), ASHRAE standards (including healthcare ventilation requirements), NFPA codes, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for inspections, audits, and regulatory surveys.
  • Ensure compliance with all medical center policies and procedures including payroll, regulatory training, etc.
  • Assist with capital planning, equipment replacement, and HVAC system upgrades.
  • Manage HVAC maintenance budgets, parts inventory, and vendor contracts.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to schedule and record work performed.
  • Manage staff in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Engineering bachelor's degree and related experience, including 4–6 years experience in industrial/commercial HVAC systems, piping, fluid flow, electronic/pneumatic control systems, HVAC and Building Automation commissioning.
  • Knowledge of and at least 2 years of union trade supervisory experience desired.
