Senior Level Professional Engineer - NY/NJ Highway Business Class Lead
HDR seeks an experienced professional to lead highway design services for projects across the New York/New Jersey area and the broader Northeast. The candidate will set strategic vision, supervise staff, manage complex projects, support business development, and uphold the HDR culture of quality and innovation.
Operations / Project Management Responsibilities- Provide technical and client leadership for highway design projects, mentor staff, and oversee project technical aspects.
- Act as senior QA/QC, ensuring engagement and successful delivery.
- Function as Project Manager, taking responsibility for production, delivery of services, and client expectations.
- Attract, develop and retain staff; promote knowledge management and best practices.
- Develop and maintain production tools, technical policies, best practices, and automation.
- Advocate for professional and ethical standards, serving as a role model.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Lead development of client-valued, market-driven technology approaches to grow market share.
- Maintain client relationships, focusing on HDR's highway design credentials.
- Develop long-term highway design practice strategic plan.
- Participate in business development activities as pursuit champion or proposal reviewer.
- Identify market opportunities and develop winning pursuit strategies.
- Build client relationships in collaboration with business development leaders and local staff.
- Represent HDR at state and national professional organizations.
- Bachelor's degree in Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field.
- 10 years of relevant experience.
- Commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and HDR values.
- Professional or engineering registration and related technical experience.
- Experience in developing and managing diverse teams.
- Cooperation with area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class initiatives.
- Active participation in the employee-owned culture.
- 15 years of highway engineering experience, majority in NY/NJ region.
- Master's degree in engineering, planning or related field.
- Registered Professional Engineer in NY and NJ (or ability to attain within 3 months).
- Experience with NY/NJ clients (e.g., NYSDOT, NYSTA, NYCDOT, NJDOT, NJTA, PANYNJ).
- Experience in staff development, recruiting, mentoring, career path development.
- Active involvement with industry associations, visible profile.
- Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines and handle multiple assignments.
- Experience preparing scopes of work, fee estimates, budgets, and financial reports.
- Experience delivering work on design-bid-build, design-build, owner's representative, and PMC.
- Experience building and managing training programs, resource planning, marketing plans, and proposal preparation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven contract development and capital improvement implementation.
- Experience overseeing projects >$5M and projects with construction value >= $50M.
- Preference for local candidates.

Compensation: $185,063-$264,375 (NY, NY); $177,660-$253,800 (Newark, NJ). Benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, employee assistance program, paid leave, retirement savings plan, referral bonus, tuition reimbursement.
