The base salary for this position is dependent upon experience and location ranging from $128,000 to $160,400

The Principal Engineer is able to work independently, represents AVANGRID on industry associations, and applies established distribution planning criteria to identify deficiencies in the distribution system. Assists Distribution Engineers and Field Planners in evaluating system reliability and new service requirements. Acts as a technical leader in the Interconnection group to direct, oversee, and mentor other Interconnection Engineers. Proactively identifies and performs special projects and studies that solve unique and complex problems with broad business impact.

• Solve complex and unique Distribution Planning and Reliability issues and studies, including large-scale customer load additions and complex DER interconnections. Develop scoping documents for complex distribution system improvement projects and propose solutions for issues outside established distribution planning criteria; include recommendations for new distribution substations and upgrades/replacements of existing substations and equipment.
• Develop alternative methods or design concepts to resolve unique problems or improve processes/services, including Non-Wires Alternatives (NWAs).
• Anticipate internal/external business issues and threats and recommend process improvements.
• Proactively study and report on the status of all distribution system facilities in the assigned geographical area on a repeating cycle (area may include multiple OPCOs).
• Serve as an expert for studies and projects of extreme importance to AVANGRID; manage divisional and company-wide projects/studies/initiatives and act as SME on assigned demonstration projects across AVANGRID.
• Lead teams, mentor others, review engineering work, and provide direction to resources inside and outside the department.
• Present to regulatory/public entities, explain difficult concepts, and influence others.
• Utilize computer-aided analysis tools to identify system deficiencies and plan for reinforcements and DER system impact studies.
• Perform complex engineering analyses for locating and determining settings for distribution automation equipment.
• May serve as Department leader in the absence of the Supervisor of Interconnections.
• Assist during storm restoration.
• Lead teams, projects, or program initiatives across multiple OpCos to solve complex problems with broad impact.

Education & Experience

• BS Degree in Electrical Engineering
• 10 years of relevant experience
• Advanced Degree and/or PE License desired
• Experience in Distribution Planning, Reliability Engineering, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
• Broad knowledge of internal/external business and regulatory issues

  Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Construction, field experience, standardization, developing business cases and defending them
• Engineering documentation: document, interpret, review, and approve engineering work done by others
• Regulatory Knowledge:
  Local, State, and Federal regulatory standards (NERC, NPCC, ISO, PUC, etc.)

• Power System Studies:
  Area studies, Power Flow, DER, Voltage, Contingency, phase imbalance, Power Factor correction, Short Circuit, reliability, resiliency, capacity, distribution automation
• Software Proficiency:
  Power System Analytics (e.g., CYME, PSS/E, SYNERGY, ASPEN)
