Job DescriptionIn order to be considered for this position, the candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Assistant Civil Engineer or must have filed for the Open Competitive Assistant Civil Engineer Exam #7006. Filing open until 8/21/26. The New York City Department of Transportation's Cycling & Micromobility unit is advancing the next phase of the City's Streets Plan, building on the progress made since 2021 in delivering protected bike lanes and safer, more connected corridors for cyclists and micromobility users.
As NYC prepares for its second Streets Plan targeting one million daily cycling trips by 2030 the agency is investing in expanded network development, wider and more durable lane designs, and neighborhood scale improvements that support the growing number of riders and delivery workers. This role will directly support the Cycling & Micromobility Network Expansion Program by helping deliver world class street designs and the infrastructure needed to meet the City's ambitious mobility goals.
The Division of Traffic Operations is seeking a skilled and dedicated Assistant Civil Engineer to join the Signals & Street Lighting Engineering Design Unit. The Assistant Civil Engineer performs engineering work related to the planning, design, analysis, and implementation of projects within the Cycling & Micromobility Network Expansion Program. The Assistant Civil Engineer will support the Cycling & Micromobility Network Expansion Program by developing and reviewing engineering designs that enable safer, more connected corridors for cyclists and micromobility users.
The selected candidate will prepare designs, plans, contract and working drawings, contract specifications, technical documentation, and estimates of quantities. They will coordinate with design consultants on capital and interagency projects citywide. The Assistant Civil Engineer will review, comment on, and prepare AutoCAD designs while evaluating contract documents for the modification of new and existing signalized intersections across the city. Additional responsibilities include participating in meetings with design consultants and lead agencies, and maintaining records of drawings, plans, maps, surveys, and inspection data.
Some assignments may require a driver's license. Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of the appointment in this position.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or 2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
Preferred Skills- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications. Some assignments may require a driver's license. Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of the appointment in this position.
