Location: New York

A nationally recognized sustainability and building performance consulting firm is seeking a Building Decarbonization Technical Lead to help expand its growing decarbonization, electrification, and applied research practice.

This role combines technical leadership, project execution, market transformation initiatives, and client engagement. The successful candidate will lead complex decarbonization projects focused on building electrification, energy efficiency, measurement & verification (M&V), pilot programs, retrofit implementation, and emerging technologies across commercial and multifamily buildings.

This position is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex building performance challenges and translating technical insights into practical solutions for clients, utilities, public agencies, and industry stakeholders.

Locations:
New York, Boston, or Washington DC (hybrid)

Key Responsibilities

Technical Project Leadership

  • Lead building decarbonization initiatives from concept through implementation and evaluation.
  • Oversee market research, pilot studies, field investigations, retrofit projects, and M&V efforts.
  • Develop technical solutions to operational and implementation challenges.
  • Translate technical findings into actionable recommendations for clients and stakeholders.
  • Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, and quality standards.
  • Create technical tools, frameworks, and best practices to support project delivery.
Industry Engagement & Business Development
  • Represent the organization at conferences, industry events, and technical working groups.
  • Contribute to white papers, case studies, technical publications, and presentations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with utilities, government agencies, developers, and building owners.
  • Support proposal development and identify opportunities for practice growth.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and consultants.
  • Support internal training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Review technical analyses, engineering reports, and project deliverables.
  • Foster collaboration across multidisciplinary project teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Building Science, Architecture, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or required.
  • 10+ years of experience in one or more of the following:
  • Energy efficiency consulting
  • Applied research
  • MEP consulting
  • Building performance services
  • Demonstrated success leading technically complex projects through implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • HVAC systems
  • Domestic hot water systems
  • Building controls
  • Electrical systems
  • Building electrification strategies
  • Experience with measurement & verification (M&V), pilot programs, and retrofit implementation.
  • Strong project management and client relationship management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with multifamily building decarbonization and retrofit programs.
  • Familiarity with utility incentive programs, energy policy, and market transformation initiatives.
  • Experience working with utilities, government agencies, or public-sector energy programs.
  • Experience developing technical guidance documents, market assessments, or implementation frameworks.
  • Established relationships within the building decarbonization and sustainability community.
  • Previous mentoring or team leadership experience.
  • Experience with CAD, Power BI, Python, or other analytical tools.
Travel
  • Local site visits and field investigations approximately 15-30%.
  • Limited overnight travel, generally less than 15%.
