The Town of Bethlehem Department of Public Works is seeking candidates to work at the Town’s wastewater treatment facilities. Candidates seeking transfer from other Town departments and divisions will be considered. Primary skills required will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Mechanical aptitude
• Familiarity with elementary principles of chemistry and general science
• Ability to learn principles and procedures related to the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant
• Ability to develop skill in the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment
• Working knowledge of principles and applications of physics, chemistry, and bacteriology as applied to sewage treatment and disposal
• Skilled in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment
• Ability to read, understand, and record data from gauges, scales, meters.
• Ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions

Job duties will include, but are not necessarily limited to:

• Learning and assisting in the inspection, operation, adjustment, and maintenance plus repair of pumps, valves, screens, and related mechanical equipment
• Learning and assisting in the making of tests to determine chlorine residual
• Cleaning channels, screens, tanks, and other equipment
• Learning and assisting in the preparation and maintenance of activity records and reports
• Painting equipment, structures, and sewage facilities

Starting salary for this position is: $ 47,040 with a range up to $57,750.

Successful candidates in this position may be provided supplementary training necessary to obtain certification as a wastewater treatment plant operator

Please note that possession of a Type II-A certificate may qualify candidates for the position of Sewage Treatment Plant Operator with a starting salary of $60,255.
