positon summary:this position is essential to supporting nyct’s mandated structural inspection program and ensuring infrastructure remains in a state of good repair. The role provides technical guidance to infrastructure iron, icc, and the division of stations by conducting verification inspections, joint condition surveys, tracking and prioritizing repairs, reviewing prdc and design drawings, and performing pre ‑ pour steel, rebar, and formwork inspections.
The position also supports design ‑ build station and structure capital projects by participating in pre‑final and final inspections.
staffing shortages have already limited participation in key design ‑ phase inspections, creating operational strain. Because the operational portion of this mission is mandated by new york state and federal law, this reimbursable position is needed to allow non ‑ reimbursable staff to focus on their core responsibilities. Adding this role will also free existing staff to perform specialized inspections for recurring structural issues, including terracotta ceilings and decorative slats.
responsibilities:the incumbent(s) will serve as part of the structural inspection group and will support both internal and external inspection requirements to ensure that nyct’s concrete and steel infrastructure remains safe for public use.
under the supervision of senior engineers, responsibilities include:
- performing comprehensive, close‑up inspections of various nyct structural types.
- maintaining and updating defect databases; analyzing defects and recommending corrective actions.
- preparing designs, repair plans, scopes of work, cost estimates, and project profiles for repairs performed by in‑house forces, vendors, or capital program contracts within the infrastructure engineering subdivision.
- supervising on‑site testing activities as required.
- attending planning, design, and field meetings to represent the division.
- conducting final inspections of completed work under senior engineer supervision and generating punch lists for capital projects.
- researching existing conditions and reviewing record drawings and related documentation.
the incumbent(s) will also be trained to respond to structural trouble calls and emergencies on a 24/7 basis.
education and experience:- a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
- a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering technology and three years of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
- a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master’s degree from
an accredited college in civil engineering.
license requirementsa motor vehicle driver’s license valid in the state of new york may be required for certain assignments.
if required, this license must be maintained for duration of appointment.

- proficiency with ms office suite, internet and mobile applications, microstation, and nonconformity databases.
- knowledge of structural inspection practices for concrete and steel.
- ability to read and prepare technical drawings and correspondence.
- strong understanding of construction design and applicable code requirements across multiple city agencies.
