Position: Beckhoff Specialist - 3 months project
Location: New York

Renaissance Fusion is developing key technologies for future fusion reactors, including next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) materials and magnets, liquid-metal technologies, and modular stellarator systems. Our team is international, diverse, agile, and based in Grenoble, in the French Alps.

To support the rapid development of our HTS prototyping activities, we are looking for an Interim Beckhoff PLC & HMI Specialist to strengthen our automation team for a short-term mission focused on an MOCVD (Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) system.

Assignment

You will join the HTS prototyping line and contribute immediately at an expert level to the design, testing, commissioning support, and handover of a Beckhoff-based control system with HMI for an MOCVD machine.

The mission will be carried out in close collaboration with an automation engineer who has already developed a significant amount of reusable work on MoMo, our small MOCVD prototyping platform.

Main Responsibilities
  • Design and finalize the Beckhoff PLC architecture for the MOCVD system.
  • Develop and adapt PLC software using Beckhoff / TwinCAT technologies.
  • Develop and validate the HMI interface for machine operation, monitoring, alarms, and diagnostics.
  • Integrate field devices, sensors, actuators, and process equipment into the control system.
  • Reuse and extend existing automation developments from the MoMo prototype.
  • Perform functional testing, debugging, and validation of the control system.
  • Support commissioning activities and ensure reliable operation of the equipment.
  • Prepare technical documentation, software structure descriptions, I/O lists, operating instructions, and maintenance information.
  • Ensure an effective handover of the system to Renaissance Fusion engineers, including knowledge transfer and support material.
Required Profile

We are looking for a hands-on expert capable of becoming operational immediately.

Technical Skills
  • Strong expertise in Beckhoff automation systems.
  • Excellent proficiency with TwinCAT (PLC programming, HMI, motion/control environment, diagnostics).
  • Experience with industrial automation, instrumentation, and process control systems.
  • Ability to work independently on system design and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with special machines, process equipment, semiconductor, vacuum, coating, or thin film deposition systems is a strong advantage.
  • Familiarity with MOCVD equipment or thermal process systems is appreciated.
Experience
  • Significant industrial experience in Beckhoff PLC development and commissioning.
  • Proven ability to deliver operational systems within short time frames.
  • Experience in knowledge transfer and technical handover is appreciated.
Languages
  • French and/or English.

  • Able to work effectively in a fast-moving R&D environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Comfortable interacting with multidisciplinary teams (automation, process, electrical, and mechanical engineers).
