Job Description & How to Apply Below
At Chelsea Piers you will find colleagues who are passionate about what we do. Careers at Chelsea Piers offer unmatched facilities and proven career growth opportunities for people who are passionate about transforming the lives of our community through sports, fitness, and event experiences. All employees receive transportation benefits, a complimentary membership to the Calm App and Chelsea Piers Fitness, access to Linked In Learning, paid safe/sick time, and other exciting venue benefits.
Full-time employees also receive medical, dental, and vision insurance; FSA savings; 401(k) matching; paid time off; tuition assistance.
About the Opportunity Chelsea Piers is looking for a Lead Building Engineer to help run the physical plant at one of New York's most iconic sports and entertainment complexes - and to build a career doing it, not just clock in for a job.
This is a rare setup in the trade: one site, steady hours, real stability. You won't be driving between properties or chasing service calls across the city - you'll know this building, this equipment, and this team inside and out. You'll lead a Building Engineer who reports alongside you to the Chief Engineer, giving you a real chance to grow into a leadership track within our facilities organization.
What we offer:
· Competitive pay: $40-$50/hour, plus a guaranteed 10 hours/week of overtime ($115-145K+ annual take-home), commensurate with experience
· One site: steady, single-location work instead of traveling between properties
· Job security:
Chelsea Piers has been a fixture in this community for decades, with as steady a workload as this trade offers
· Full benefits: medical, dental, vision, FSA, 401(k) matching, tuition assistance, and more
· Real time off: 15 vacation days to start, growing to 25 days with tenure
· A path forward: a role built for someone who wants to advance, not just maintain
This is a place to put down roots, develop expertise, take on greater responsibility, and build a long-term career with Chelsea Piers. If you're an experienced building engineer or HVAC technician, and you want a place where showing up and doing it right actually gets you somewhere, we want to hear from you.
Please note:
This is a non-union position and is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Candidates should apply with the understanding that employment in this role will be on a non-union basis.
As Lead Building Engineer, you'll report to the Chief Engineer and take the lead on day-to-day operations and mechanical issues across the property, while supervising a Building Engineer alongside you. Core responsibilities include:
· Lead daily operations — direct maintenance activity across the facility and supervise the Building Engineer's task list and schedule
· Own principal mechanical systems — HVAC, ice rink chiller plant, pools, ejector pits, elevators, dehumidification systems, walk-ins, steam rooms, saunas, etc.
· Be the point person in a crisis — first point of contact for mechanical issues, driving fast resolution with minimal disruption
· Manage vendors and contracts — oversee MEP vendors and service contracts to budget while holding quality
· Coordinate projects — build and manage task lists, working with Chief Engineer to prioritize work orders.
· Report up — deliver daily activity reports on mechanical issues and operations to the Chief Engineer
· Keep it safe and compliant — run regular inspections and drive safety improvements across the facility7+ years of commercial facilities experience including maintenance of chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handlers, RTUs, VAV systems, hydronic heating/cooling
Hands-on HVAC diagnostics and performance optimization — you fix it yourself, not just direct others
Proficiency with BAS/BMS controls and preventive maintenance programs
Experience maintaining large, occupied facilities
Firm understanding of all building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fire protection, etc.) and ability to read technical plans
Must have or obtain EPA 608, and FDNY Certificates of Fitness (i.e. – S12, S13, etc.), Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
Prior supervisory or lead experience preferred
Flexible availability — weekends, holidays, and early/mid/late shifts
