Field Assistant for Site-Specific Experience

The Playwrights Realm, an Obie Award-winning non-profit committed to early career playwrights, new works and boundary-pushing projects, seeks a detail-oriented assistant with comfort interacting with the public to be part of Daria Miyeko Marinelli’s This is Not NOT a Drill. This is a site-specific project that lives at the intersection of art and activism.

About the Project:

This is Not NOT a Drill is a unique, site-specific event combining elements of self-guided audio tour through Lower Manhattan with facilitated collaborative activities, helping participants explore the city’s history of injustice and rebellion, and discover what adventure exists in taking a stand. Elements of the experience take place both on the city streets around City Hall Park, as well as in a nearby loft space.

About the positions:

The function of the Field Assistant is to support this experience in a variety of ways, these include:

  • Check-in for participants, providing orientation for the tour and ensuring audio is working
  • Supporting facilitators both outside on the tour and inside at the loft
  • Assisting with mid-event loft space transition

The Field Assistants will interact with audience members throughout the experience. Strong applicants will be flexible and organized, with strong communication skills. Field Assistants will report to the Event Manager.

During the rehearsal period, all team members will support the writer and director in creating the best interactive framework with which to engage audiences, including working together to role play as participants during that exploration. All team members will also develop a familiarity with the entire experience in order to be a flexible resource if the live nature of the ongoing experience requires changes, temporarily or long term.

Job Requirements:

  • Participate in rehearsals and facilitate live events in collaboration with the project’s Event Manager, Assistant Event Manager, Director, and other creative team members
  • Collaborate with the other Field Assistants and the Event Manager, working between indoor and outdoor spaces to support audience experience during live events
  • Inside the loft space support check-in and orientation for audience members, provide assistance to the Workshop Leads and Facilitators, and help with the mid-event loft space transition
  • Outside, support the Gardener and Canvasser in their activations, and provide way finding for audience members
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a public park setting, and navigate potential interaction with the public as well as with participants, as well as changing weather conditions and any necessary modifications as a result.
  • Support other aspects of the experience when needed, including but not limited to acting as a test audience member during rehearsals, and assisting with presets and closing procedures during live events.

Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds (including but not limited to those of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or ability) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Accommodations are available upon request throughout the process.
