About the Position

We are seeking an experienced A1 Audio Engineer for an Off-Broadway production at the Jerry Orbach Theater in Midtown Manhattan.

The A1 will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the production’s audio system, as well as executing the live mix for performances. The ideal candidate is an experienced theatrical audio professional who is comfortable working independently, communicates well with performers and production staff, and can maintain a consistent, high-quality mix throughout a performance run.

The Jerry Orbach Theater is a 199-seat, 3/4-thrust black-box theater with a built-in theatrical sound and microphone system.

Responsibilities
  • Operate the show’s audio system and mix performances from the A1 position.
  • Execute all scripted sound cues and live microphone mixing with accuracy and consistency.
  • Manage and maintain wireless microphone systems, including mic placement, frequency coordination, battery management, troubleshooting, and daily maintenance.
  • Perform sound checks and pre-show system checks.
  • Maintain appropriate gain structure, EQ, dynamics, effects, and overall system levels.
  • Troubleshoot audio issues quickly and professionally during rehearsals and performances.
  • Communicate effectively with the Stage Manager, performers, musicians, designers, and other members of the production team.
  • Maintain accurate paperwork, cueing information, presets, and show documentation.
  • Assist with sound-related maintenance, repairs, and equipment organization as needed.
  • Help ensure that all audio equipment is properly stored, maintained, and ready for each performance.
  • Participate in rehearsals, technical calls, notes, and other production calls as required.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Professional theatrical A1 / mixing experience.
  • Strong understanding of live theatrical audio signal flow and gain structure.
  • Experience operating wireless microphones in a theatrical environment.
  • Ability to mix dialogue and/or musical theater performances in real time.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and professional during live performances.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
  • Ability to work a variable theater schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Preferred:

  • Previous Off-Broadway,regional theater, or professional touring experience.
  • Experience with digital audio consoles and theatrical cueing systems.
  • Experience maintaining wireless microphone systems and coordinating frequencies.
  • Familiarity with Dante or other digital audio networking systems.
  • Experience working in a small black-box / thrust theater environment.
Schedule

Engagement: August 9 – September 17, 2026

The schedule will include rehearsals, technical calls, performances, maintenance, and other production-related calls as necessary. Candidates should be prepared for a typical theater schedule with evening and weekend performances.

Exact call times and weekly schedule will be provided to the selected candidate.
