Musical Lighting/Sound Director

Purpose:

To manage all technical aspects of lighting and sound for the musical production, ensuring high-quality audio and visual presentation that enhances the performance. This position involves working closely with the director, student technical crew, and auditorium staff to design, install, operate, and maintain all lighting and sound systems during rehearsals and performances.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the musical director and stage director to develop a lighting and sound plan that supports the production's creative vision.
• Design lighting plots and sound cues appropriate for the show's staging and emotional tone.
• Set up and operate all audio equipment, including microphones, mixers, speakers, and playback devices.
• Oversee and manage the hanging, focusing, and programming of lighting instruments.
• Train and supervise student crew members in the safe and effective operation of sound and lighting equipment.
• Attend all technical rehearsals and performances to operate or oversee the execution of sound and lighting cues.
• Maintain and troubleshoot all sound and lighting equipment.
• Create cue sheets and coordinate timing with the production team.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards for all technical operations.
• Provide input for equipment needs and assist in ordering or renting additional gear if necessary.

Qualifications:

• Prior experience with theatrical lighting and sound design, preferably in a school or educational theater setting.
• Proficiency with lighting consoles, DMX programming, and digital audio mixing boards.
• Strong problem-solving and technical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to train and mentor students in lighting and sound operation.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends during the production schedule.
• Commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive technical environment for students.
• Experience with musical theater productions is strongly preferred.
