POSITION OVERVIEWThe Head Props is responsible for loading in and out the props package of the show and designating portions of it to their assistant(s). They preset props, teach local stagehands their tracks, and run the deck to ensure scene changes occur smoothly and safely. They will supervise all the touring crew within their department and local crew during performances, load in, and load out.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead and direct a local props crew to assist in loading the show
- Become familiar and be able to train other crew members on show-specific props gear, the assembly process, and travel methodology.
- Conduct safety orientations and task-specific training for local crew, new cast members, and departmental personnel, covering venue-specific hazards, emergency procedures, material handling, and safe use of department equipment, including prop weapons and pyrotechnics.
- Load and secure prop elements in touring trailers
- Maintain props and pyrotechnics inventory, including the repair of broken or damaged props and replacing perishables as needed.
- Keep the props work and storage areas clean and in good working order
- Oversee and direct the assistant within the props department
- Rehearse major scenic changes with local crew
- Run all show cues in the performance with local assistance
- Ensure props, trunks, and other assigned equipment are loaded into touring trailers safely and securely as well as unloaded, built, and placed properly at each new venue
- Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with both Disney Safety and industry standards and promote a proactive safety culture. Actively identify hazards, correct unsafe conditions, and ensure safe work practices are consistently followed by touring and local crews.
- Work closely with Production Management to provide feedback and, when necessary, disciplinary action to members of the department.
- Provide recommendations to Production Management regarding staffing of open positions within the department.
- Strong leadership skills and professionalism with a focus on guiding and supporting a diverse crew of varying skill levels.
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to completing both complex and routine tasks with precision.
- Technical Theatre experience, specifically within the National touring environment is necessary for this role.
- Proven success maintaining a friendly and positive attitude working long hours in close quarters with different types of personalities.
- Flexible and willing to work an 8-show a week schedule, which may include additional calls outside of regular performances for rehearsals
- Comfort working in an environment with varying loud sound and flashing lighting which may include: loud sounds, flashing lights and dark/cramped spaces
- Excellent practical, problem-solving, organizational, planning and time management skills.
- Proficiency in computer skills (Mac and PC) is a bonus; a willingness to learn new technologies is encouraged.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and attention to detail.
- Able to physically move 75 pounds, be comfortable lifting and walking backwards, and be comfortable walking up and down stairs.
